Welcome to our January 2017 Newsletter. Although later than usual, we hope you all had a great Christmas and will enjoy a fruitful New Year.

In this issue, we have membership information; news of our video channel; news of new composers’ opportunities as well as the usual reminders of calls for scores.

NewMusicSA Membership

If you are a member, you will shortly receive an email from me asking for your membership renewal. If you are not a member, you can always become a member by sending me a completed application form, available from our website.

Please note that membership is from 1 March 2017 to 28 February 2018. Membership fees will not increase this year, so there is an individual ‘early bird’ category of R150 if you pay by the end of February; after which individual membership will be R200. If you are a student or unwaged, you only need pay R100 for the year. If you are an institution, such as a university, you will receive a subscription renewal notice of R750.

We look forward to your support, and please also note that donations are always welcome. This year, we will earmark any donations received for a specific purpose, such as a scholarship; details to be announced later.

Both these performances formed part of the 2015 NewMusicSA Indaba, at the Odeion School of Music, University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Composers’ Opportunities

  1. The 8th International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition

A note from the International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition Committee:

The 8th International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition will be held at the Prague Conservatory in the Czech Republic from 23 to 31 Jul 2017. This competition was founded in order to extol the great accomplishments of the composer Antonín Dvořák, and to discover and raise-up young, talented composers who can carry on the historical musical legacy. The composition committee intends to support the selected composers’ continued development by providing composition commissions, as well as recording and performance opportunities.   1. Elektro Arts – Call for Works

The Babeș-Bolyai University, the Art and Design University, and the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy are pleased to announce the 2nd edition of Elektro Arts. The Festival will take place on May 12th and May 13th, 2017 on the beautiful venues of Cluj-Napoca.

The Festival will be hosting a Call for Electroacoustic Works, which has always been committed to showcasing Digital Art.

Established or emerging sound artists are invited to submit their original works from the wide spectrum of electroacoustic music. Regardless of the variety of style, preference will be given to music for 1-6 channels fixed media.

The works must be received by March 31st, 2017. Complete details of the submission process are found online.

  1. Call for Scores, The Riot Ensemble

On October 28th the Riot Ensemble will give the UK Premiere of Chaya Czernowin's Ayre: Towed through plumes, thicket, asphalt, sawdust and hazardous air I shall not forget the sound of. They are looking for two composers of any nationality and age, who will each receive £550 commissions to write for the same line-up of bass flute, bass clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, viola and cello.

They have previously released live videos of CFS commissions, and in two weeks we'll be recording their 2016 commissions - from Yukiko Watanabe and Lee Westwood - for their second commercial album with Coviello Classics.

Reminders of Call for Scores

  1. Risuonanze 2017 Call for Scores

       Associazione Culturale TKE is announcing a Call for Scores ‘Risuonanze 2017’.

The Call is open to composers of any nationality and age; its deadline is February 27, 2017.

  1. Competition: Ensemble Nuove Musiche

Ensemble Nuove Musiche association announces an international competition whose award ceremony will take place in Savona (Italy) in 2017. The award ceremony of this call will be part of the 5th edition of the Festival Internazionale di Musica di Savona organized by them in the city of Savona.
